Keeping Your Pet Healthy

How often should you treat your pet preventatively against worms, ticks and fleas?
Deworm your animals (and yourself) with the correct dose once every 3 - 6 months. Puppies and kittens must be treated more often - please ask us.
Treat against ticks and fleas once EVERY month.

How can I tell if my pet is sick?
If you pet has pale or grey gums, is not eating, has weight loss or vomiting and / or diarrhoea it is not well, and you should take them to a vet to be checked out.

How do we vaccinate and how often should I do it?
Vaccination build up your pet's immunity (ability to fight off sickness). We should take our dogs and cats to the vet once a year for vaccination, and more often when they are puppies.

Are bones good for my pet?
NO! It is traditional to give dog bones. Many places sell bones for dogs to chew and dogs to enjoy it, but, bones actually damage your dogs teeth and may get stuck in their teeth, throat, chest and intestines.
Even ground up bones or boiled bones can be harmful. Bones can also cause constipation. Rather give them other things to chew, like rawhides.

What animal can get rabies and how can an animal give it to a human?
Rabies is a virus that travels up your nerves and affects your brain, you become sick, and then you die. It is transmitted in the saliva (spit) of an infected animal. Any mammal can be infected with rabies (young dog or your cat can get it).

Rabies can infect human beings and is always deadly. Humans mostly get rabies from infected dogs after a bite.

Do cats need exercise?
YES, cats like to climb and jump. They will also play with toys. Kittens are the most active, but don't play too long, they also need their rest to grow. Adult cats tend to sleep A LOT. Don't disturb them needlessly. Just wait, there will be times that they will be more active and up for a game.

When is a good age to sterilise?
PUPPIES and KITTENS should be STERILISED at 6 months old, but an older pet can be sterilised at any age.
Males are castrated and females are spayed.

Why should cats and dogs be sterilised?
An animal that has not be sterilised can get some illnesses that sterilised animals can't.

Intact male dogs and cats are more likely to wander around and get into fights as compared to castrated males. This means they can get run over more easily, and can cause trouble with other peoples pets.

Female dogs and cats come on heat and cause male animals to come and visit - this means they can also get into fights, and cause other dogs to get into fights.

If you dog or cat get pregnant then there will be a whole lot more animals that need homes, and that means more animals that will have to be put down, because there are not enough homes for all of them.

How do I care for my pet's fur and teeth?
Some simple tips for furry pets:

Brush, comb or stroke their fur every day. Long-haired breeds need extra brushing to keep knots away.

Brush teeth with a special toothbrush and toothpaste 3 times a week (or more if they like it).

Bath them about once a month. If you shampoo the fur too often it dries out and becomes flaky and itchy.
